Event Description

Just a few years ago, some people began to argue we are living in a post-racial society; lately most people would agree that racial tensions are real. Some would even say they are at a level they never expected to see in 2016. This racial climate causes some to feel anger and resentment; others feel confusion, hurt, disillusionment, even despair. Still, many want to talk about what, if anything, can be done to heal racial divides.

Most people believe that understanding only comes with information, relationship and dialogue. To that end, NPR and ideastream are collaborating to host a unique live event to engage in an open and honest conversation about race – a conversation that explores how race affects our lives today through the prism of specific issues in Northeast Ohio. Members of the audience and those who participate in our social media conversation will have the chance to address questions they’ve always wondered about, but have been afraid to ask or have not had the opportunity to ask. This will be that rare opportunity to ask questions and hear informed perspectives that could create the foundation for clarity and mutual understanding.

It's the latest in the NPR event series, Michel Martin: Going There, and will be produced in partnership with member station 90.3 WCPN ideastream®. Join the conversation on Twitter with #OwningRace and at @NPRMichel.
